💰 Understanding American Odds

American odds are displayed as either positive (+) or negative (-) numbers. They tell you how much you need to bet or how much you can win.

Negative Odds (-)

Shows how much you need to bet to WIN $100 profit

Example: -150
Bet $150 → Win $100 profit
Total return: $250
FORMULA:
Profit = Stake × (100 / |Odds|)
Payout = Stake + Profit

Positive Odds (+)

Shows how much profit you WIN on a $100 bet

Example: +200
Bet $100 → Win $200 profit
Total return: $300
FORMULA:
Profit = Stake × (Odds / 100)
Payout = Stake + Profit

💡 Quick Tip

Negative odds = Favorite (more likely to win, lower payout)
Positive odds = Underdog (less likely to win, higher payout)

Moneyline Bets

Simplest bet type - just pick the winner

How It Works

  • Pick which team will win the game outright
  • No point spreads or totals involved
  • Your team just needs to win by any margin
  • ~Tie games result in a "push" (refund)

Example Game

Kansas City Chiefs-150
Denver Broncos+130
Chiefs are favored (negative odds)
Broncos are underdog (positive odds)

Calculation Examples

Betting on Favorite (Chiefs -150)
Stake: $150
Profit: $150 (stake) × (100/150 odds) = $100
Payout: $250
Betting on Underdog (Broncos +130)
Stake: $100
Profit: $100 (stake) × (130/100 odds) = $130
Payout: $230

Point Spread Bets

Level the playing field with a points handicap

How It Works

  • Favorite must win by MORE than the spread
  • Underdog can lose by LESS than the spread (or win)
  • Spread is added/subtracted from final score
  • ~Exact spread margin = "push" (refund)

Example Game

Buffalo Bills-7.5 (-110)
Miami Dolphins+7.5 (-110)
Bills must win by 8+ points
Dolphins can lose by 7 or fewer points

Example Outcomes

Bills Win 28-14
Bills win by 14 points
Bills -7.5 ✓ WINS
Dolphins +7.5 ✗ LOSES
Bills Win 21-17
Bills win by 4 points
Bills -7.5 ✗ LOSES
Dolphins +7.5 ✓ WINS
Dolphins Win 24-21
Dolphins win outright
Bills -7.5 ✗ LOSES
Dolphins +7.5 ✓ WINS

Over/Under (Totals)

Bet on the combined score of both teams

How It Works

  • Over: Combined score will be MORE than the line
  • Under: Combined score will be LESS than the line
  • Add up both teams' final scores
  • ~Exact total = "push" (refund)

Example Game

Rams vs Cardinals
Over 47.5-110
Under 47.5-110
Total points must be 48+ (Over) or 47 or fewer (Under)

Example Outcomes

Final: 28-24 (52 total)
52 > 47.5
Over 47.5 ✓ WINS
Under 47.5 ✗ LOSES
Final: 21-17 (38 total)
38 < 47.5
Over 47.5 ✗ LOSES
Under 47.5 ✓ WINS
Final: 24-24 (48 total)
48 > 47.5
Over 47.5 ✓ WINS
Under 47.5 ✗ LOSES
